Educational Shakespeare Company

£90,000 over three years towards the running costs of the Second Chance for Change project.

Under the 2009-13 Themed Grant Scheme, Mental Health in the Criminal Justice System, Trusthouse Charitable Foundation supported the Educational Shakespeare Company in the delivery of Second Chance for Change, a practical film-therapy project aimed at violent or potentially violent current and ex-offenders with severe mental health disorders.

The project enabled 12 participants each year to use storytelling to create a series of films based on their life stories or life experiences.  Participants gained an understanding of themselves, their lives, mental health issues and offending behaviour through creating and watching their own films.  An ASDAN certificate on Active Citizenship is awarded to those who complete the sessions.  Participants also gained a knowledge of film-making, teamwork and project management which improves their self-confidence, social skills and employment chances.
